Anigre (a-knee-gray)
Species: Aningeria spp.
Native Regions: Central and tropical Africa, Tanzania
Anigre (a-knee-gray) is a light and tan heart-wood which has a fairly straight grain. Commonly found with a "wave" like appearance running through the grain offering a unique luster. If left unfinished, Anigre has a cedar-like scent that appeals to many.
Argentine Brown Ebony
Species: Caesalpina paraguariensis
Native Regions: Argentina
Additional Comments: A very dense, dark-brown wood with an incredible 3-D figure in edge-grained portions. Brown Ebony wood is very hard yet very nice to work with. It shines very well and shows the deep rich grain. Brown ebony is an exotic wood with very similar properties to Gaboon Ebony. The wood is a stable, intriguing wood with golden browns and dark streaks.
African Mahogany or Khaya
Specie Latin: Khaya ivorensis
Native Regions: Tropical West and Central Africa
Specie Description: African Mahogany is an exotic wood with a deep reddish brown color. Heartwood is shades of pinkish red, darkening to reddish brown with exposure. Sapwood is a creamy or yellowish white. The grain can be straight, but is typically interlocking. The wood also often has a shimmering figure. African Mahogany is one of my favorite woods to work with.
GrandMa's Apple Tree
Species Latin: The big old apple tree at grandma's house in Logan, Utah.
Native Regions: Logan, Utah
Species Description: This is a very dark heart wood with a very light sap wood color. The wood is prone to cracking and splitting. The branchs dead branchs I had to prune last summer were very dry and cracked. For the pieces I was able to use I had to spend some extra time and effort to find pieces that were usable.
Quina or Argentine Sandalwood
Specie Latin: Myroxylon poruiferum
Native Regions: Argentina, Paraguay, Southern Brazil,
Species Description: Heartwood color is deep red, sometimes with purple highlights and high natural luster. Spicy scent, a source of balsam used in perfumes. The wood has an interlocked grain and for me it turns very easily. The wood feels like it has a deep oily feeling. It is not at all as oily as Cocobolo, but feels a bit wet even if it is dry. A heavy wood that smells different when turning.
Cocobolo
Specie Latin: Dalbergia retusa
Native Regions: Costa Rica,
Species Description: cocobolo is a tropical hardwood from Central America. Only the heartwood is used: this is typically orange or reddish-brown in color, often with a figuring of darker irregular traces weaving through the wood. By contrast, the sapwood (not often used) is a creamy yellow, with a sharp boundary with the heartwood. Cocobolo is a very heavy and oily wood that is easy turn.
Brazillian Rosewood
Specie Latin: Dalbergia nigra
Native Regions: Brazil,
Species Description: The heartwood is shades of dark brown with noticable black streaks, and the sapwood is white. The wood looks and feels oily or waxy. It is mostly straight grain with medium to coarse texture, a slight luster and a rose-like fragrance when worked.
